A: Class A extinguishers are suitable to put out fires on ordinary combustibles such as wood, paper, cloth, rubber, and many plastics. Extinguishers that are only rated for class A fires are typically filled with water. These extinguishers should ONLY be used for class A fires!
Basically any fire that leave ash behind when it finally goes out is considered Class A. You want to make sure that if you are trying to put out a Class A fire that you use a Class A fire extinguisher. Extinguishers of any other Class might not be as effective while trying to extinguish the fire.
